Neuro-imaging and genomics technology used in Denninger’s latest studies allowed scientists to measure physiological changes in greater detail on permanent changes to lobes and neurotransmitters of brain during meditation.
Series of University of Wisconsin studies have found meditation can benefit patients with chronic inflammatory disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis
‘Immortality Enzyme’
Scientists at the University of California at Los Angeles and Nobel Prize winner Elizabeth Blackburn found that 12 minutes of daily yoga meditation for eight weeks increased telomerase activity by 43 percent, suggesting an improvement in stress-induced aging. Blackburn of the University of California, San Francisco, shared the Nobel medicine prize in 2009 with Carol Greider and Jack Szostak for research on the telomerase “immortality enzyme,” which slows the cellular aging process.
Dhyanam is for the benefit of one Self where as Peruman’s approach is to the benefit of human kind and all living beings on earth. The fundamental difference is selfless approach for betterment of cosmos and establish harmony in oneself and others as well is Peruman’s approach but the other one is just for an individual .
Definitely meditation helps to improve one’s health but at the same time if you want to use the same tool/technique to seek Divine, we will fail totally.
Since Nature Truth is constructed of high qualities of virtues (Truth, Pure Characters and Spotless) and empathy . Only through Thavam i.e selfless act we can get nearer to it and enjoy its prevalence.
What Peruman is suggesting us to do is Thavam which aims at not only longevity but aims to make an individual with higher virtues as said by Valluvar .
Thavam on shaping our individual character such as kindness , sympathy, gentleness, gratitude (to Nature Truth) , compassion and it can be accelerated by sitting in one place and focusing on welfare of others by action or just through True thoughts.
Thavam can be helping others and sitting in one place with focus on chirsabhai and radiating love memorandums to everyone and slowly our feelings/spirits will get more elusive and it slowly it can be improved upon to move inwards and think more of about Nature God who is helping every moment to survive and enjoy worldly matters.
Thavam can be performed starting with 20 minutes slowly upto 2 hours and later after our retirement we can go for upto 12 hours, core of it is spreading invisible good thoughts for welfare of others/everyone and be appreciativeness to Nature God as a good human, then automatically our genetic make up changes and core ARUL which had made these total length of the human genome (organized into 22 paired chromosomes, the X chromosome (one in males, two in females) and, in males only, one Y chromosome, all being large linear DNA molecules contained within the cell nucleus) is over 3 billion base pairs gets converted to radiant pure Light.
Not but least, in this journey , we have to pray every moment directly to Nature Truth to help us not to be intervened by maya and ego.

Excellent suggestions by both the Anbargal.

I also suggest to read Thirukkural, especially the first 108 chapters and contemplate on it. some of the important chapters are அன்புடைமை Love செய்நன்றியறிதல்Gratitude, அருளுடைமைGrace, கண்ணோட்டம்Compassion, ஒப்புரவு, Non-killing, Vegetarianism, Charity etc., we must do all this without any expectations. I am sure with the Grace of Arutperunjothi Andavar, whatever need to happen will happen ultimately. In my humble view, We need to concentrate on the process and the product will be a natural outcome.
